The pledged USD 750 for every Surinamese citizen, drawn from future oil revenues, is not a trivial matter. “This money isn’t for playing chill boss,” stated VHP parliamentarian Cedric van Samson in response to widespread criticism of President Chan Santokhi’s Independence Day gesture to the people.
Van Samson believes the issue has been poorly communicated. He argues that the mindset of Surinamese citizens needs to shift to understand that this sum is meant as a financial cushion for the future. The amount will accrue annual interest of 7%. He expressed confusion over criticism from some political parties, particularly those without a single parliamentary seat.
Speaking to TBN Prime Alert, Van Samson defended the president’s decision, calling it a wise move for the country’s future. “Many don’t seem to understand this,” he said, referring to remarks such as, “I can’t even buy a beer with it.”
Regarding the president’s 200-day plan, Van Samson emphasized that it wasn’t devised on a whim. He explained that Santokhi has been engaging with neighbourhoods since taking office, exploring ways to promote local development.
A few years ago, the necessary resources weren’t available. Now that some funds exist, Van Samson considers it appropriate to implement the 200-day plan. He acknowledged criticism from certain political parties, attributing it to pre-election manoeuvring to gain votes.
Van Samson rejected claims that the initiative is an election stunt, pointing out that the president began consulting neighbourhoods long before elections were on the horizon. He also criticized some detractors for setting unrealistic expectations for the next six months.
According to Van Samson, it’s unrealistic to expect exchange rates and store prices to decrease within 200 days because the system doesn’t work that way. He noted that as elections approach, everyone seems to have something to say about the government’s policies.
