Teachers working in the interior are pleased with the payments made to vacation transporters but state that they cannot depart yet, as their supplies have run out. A school principal told Suriname suriname that, while he is glad about the payment, the teachers will wait until their salaries are deposited.
“Now that payments have been made, there is some hope that we will return to work and that schools will reopen. The teachers have been in Paramaribo for a whole month, and I don’t think they will leave empty-handed. They are waiting for their salaries to be deposited,” said the school principal, who traveled to his post at his own expense. However, he will return to Paramaribo to collect educational materials from the Ministry of Education, Science, and Culture (minOWC).
The principal added that the teachers are unhappy with their extended stay in the capital. “They know their responsibilities, but the current situation is causing a lot of dissatisfaction.”
According to him, several boxes containing new textbooks for students need to be delivered, but teachers cannot transport them to the interior independently. “There are 36 boxes of materials.”
Another principal stated that she is willing to leave but would also like to wait for her payment to restock her supplies. “I made purchases with the intention of departing on September 29, but that didn’t happen, and I’ve since used everything up. The pay slips have been issued, which means payment will follow soon. Once it’s done, I’ll leave. It’s unfortunate that the education process is being delayed in this way. My own child is affected by this, as he attends school in the interior,” the teacher explained.
Another teacher expressed concern about the low water levels in the river and the shortage of clean drinking water in the villages, caused by the ongoing drought. He wonders what will happen to them, as the water shortage is not easy to resolve and the stores are located far away.
Teachers in the interior have not departed to their posts due to delays in payments to the vacation transporters.
