In addition to the oil and gas activities offshore, Staatsolie will also remain active in onshore production. Besides the Tambaredjo area, there are plans to conduct drilling in Coronie, Uitkijk, and Weg naar Zee in the near future. These activities are scheduled to take place by the end of the year.
Staatsolie is also considering conducting drilling operations close to the coast. The company’s refinery still needs to be supplied with crude oil for many years to keep production going.
Anand Jagesar, the director of Staatsolie, states that there is a significant amount of oil present in the aforementioned areas. This oil has entered the land through the same geological formation. Taking everything into consideration, the outlook for Suriname appears to be very positive.
During the Mmanten Taki program on STVS, Jagesar explained that onshore production has so far been highly beneficial for the country. The state earns over US$ 300 million annually from this production, which amounts to approximately 17,000 barrels per day. Jagesar emphasized that maintaining this level of production is not easy, as it declines by about 10 percent each year. Therefore, it is crucial to continuously search for new oil reserves. This is the reason why several areas are being identified for future drilling operations.
Another positive development is the oil discovery in Block 52, where Staatsolie is collaborating with Malaysian company Petronas. Oil has been found in two wells, and further drilling is planned. Notably, a gas well was also discovered at the second site, and the tests conducted there have exceeded expectations, according to Jagesar.
Petronas has announced that they are working on a Final Investment Decision (FID). The speed at which this process is moving is satisfactory for Staatsolie, says the director. Petronas has a strong track record in the development of small gas fields. Additionally, they have ships in Malaysia that, with minor modifications, can already be deployed for offshore activities, avoiding the need to construct new drilling platforms.
