Today, Maisha Neus and Raoul Hellings held a spontaneous demonstration at the National Assembly (DNA) building. The pair protested against the policies of the Santokhi government, voicing sharp criticism of the country’s leadership. According to Neus and Hellings, there is a serious lack of transparency within the government, with important decisions being made without sufficient public consultation.
Hellings mentioned that many people share the same concerns and are willing to protest, but that many are waiting for someone to take the lead. “We broke the ice today,” said Hellings, referring to their action as the starting point of a broader protest movement. The demonstrators announced that they would return to the assembly building on Thursday to continue expressing their discontent.
Neus mainly criticized the lack of transparency surrounding the privatization of state-owned enterprises. The government had previously announced plans to sell or privatize various state companies, but Neus argued that there is insufficient clarity about this process. She cited the company Sail NV as an example, noting that the public is unaware of what is happening or the potential impact on employees and the country.
The demonstration was peaceful but drew significant attention from bystanders and those present at the parliament. The demonstrators continue to call for openness and public involvement in important decisions.
