NDP chairperson Jennifer Simons aligns herself with many citizens who say that enough is enough with the current way the country is being governed. “A sari, it is enough,” the politician stated during her visit to the Netherlands. She addressed party members and gave an overview of the political developments in the country.
According to her, a different way of governing and policy-making is needed to prevent Suriname from falling back into old patterns. Addressing corruption is of paramount importance, according to the NDP leader. She believes it is the responsibility of all parties to clearly indicate the direction Suriname needs to go.
If governance needs to change, and with it the fight against corruption, changes must also take place within the NDP itself. It has been agreed that an ethical code will be introduced within the organization, ensuring that everyone delegated by the party adheres to ethical standards. This is the only way the party can change the system in the country. If anyone, in any position, misappropriates the country’s funds, that person will face serious consequences, according to the chairperson.
She emphasized that the NDP has a strong vision and program. Based on that, the party should be given another opportunity to be part of the governing policy. Simons remarked that it is easy to find faults in any government. However, there must also be a plan to further build up the country. She shared with her audience that the government in power after the 2025 elections will not have an easy task. According to Simons, there will be a lot of work to do to further develop the country.
She also stressed the importance of young people within the party working diligently and honestly, so that they will be elected again by the electorate in 2030. It is crucial to consider the financial and economic state of the country after the elections.
The NDP chairperson mentioned that she does not want to make many promises, but she is committed to ensuring that all children have enough to eat and can attend school. Another promise is to lift all citizens out of poverty through a social and production program.
