President Chan Santokhi stated yesterday at the VHP party center during a press moment with journalists that his government is currently working to catch up on delays and to achieve unmet goals. This is being done while the government awaits the outcome of talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Santokhi expects that there will soon be more room to take out loans and attract capital.
Santokhi mentioned that an IMF mission is on its way. This mission is meant to help Suriname gain access to affordable capital, which is necessary to fulfill economic promises.
At present, the government must maintain a buffer of SRD 5 billion above the regular budget. Santokhi hopes that this requirement can be lowered, now that there is more certainty regarding state revenues.
Within a few days, the President expects an official response from the IMF, which, according to him, will likely provide more flexibility for policy implementation and enable further economic investments.
