The appointment of a new Minister of Home Affairs will only be discussed after President Chan Santokhi returns from his foreign trip, according to the Office of the President, in response to recent statements made by Bronto Somohardjo, vice-chairman of Pertjajah Luhur (PL).
Although there is pressure from political circles, including PL and ABOP, the President has indicated that he will only address the matter upon his return and in the presence of the chairpersons of both parties.
This agreement has been officially recorded in a letter sent to the chairpersons of ABOP and PL. The position of Minister of Home Affairs has recently become vacant after Bronto Somohardjo resigned, and filling this post is an important issue within the coalition. Minister Steven Mac Andrew of Labor, Employment, and Youth Affairs (AW and J) is currently acting as Minister of Home Affairs.
On Saturday, during an emergency meeting of the party’s structures, the PL made it clear that it has several candidates to succeed Bronto Somohardjo. PL chairman Paul Somohardjo emphasized that the party has enough qualified individuals to fill the position. A final choice will soon be made by the party council and then discussed with the coalition leadership. The appointment can only take place with the approval of the coalition partners.
Bronto Somohardjo, who stepped down under political pressure, stated that he offered his resignation to relieve President Santokhi. He emphasized that he has done nothing wrong and expects the ongoing CLAD investigation to exonerate him of all accusations. Somohardjo has called for the final report to be made public in order to clear his name.
Despite tensions between PL and ABOP, the issue between him and Brunswijk is now behind them. Paul Somohardjo confirmed that he and Vice President Ronnie Brunswijk are once again on good terms and that their friendship remains intact. Both parties will run independently in the upcoming elections but will continue to respect each other within the coalition.
