President can set aside agreement with PL from 2020

President Chan Santokhi can set aside the agreement made in 2020 with the coalition parties, says political scientist Eugène van der San. It concerns only an agreement that outlines the distribution of the ministries. According to this agreement, the Pertjajah Luhur is entitled to the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Now that there are tensions between the PL and the ABOP, the President can depart from that agreement at his own discretion. The claim of Paul Somohardjo’s party is weak. Van der San states that when the agreement was made, the National Party of Suriname (NPS) was also involved. Speaking to LIM FM, the former director of the Office of the President says that the President is free in his decision-making. He can choose to keep the ministry under the PL’s management.
Rumors have been circulating for a few days that Urmila Ramlagansing, who was active in this ministry during the Venetiaan administration, may return. Before his departure abroad, President Santokhi stated that he wants someone with expertise at the Ministry of Home Affairs, due to the upcoming elections.
Van der San says that the President, because of his position, can decide what he thinks is best. He is unsure if the President, should he decide otherwise, can be accused of breaking his word. The political scientist noted that the PL is not in a position to enforce anything within the coalition. If it were otherwise, the President would not be able to consider this. Van der San questions how the party would manage to retain the Ministry of Home Affairs. It is a matter of principle whether the President wants to adhere to it, according to Van der San.
