Minister Inez Pane of Social Affairs and Housing (Sozavo) informed Suriname suriname that financial resources for payments in the Kabalebo district have been requested from the Ministry of Finance and Planning. “Once the funds are transferred, we will begin preparations for payments in Kabalebo. I encountered many backlogs in payments in the interior, and we are working hard to resolve them as quickly as possible. As soon as the funds are deposited, they will be disbursed,” stated the minister.
Residents of Apoera held a protest at the Kabalebo district commissioner’s office in recent days. Their goal was to draw the government’s attention, particularly that of the Minister of Sozavo. According to the residents, they have been waiting for ten months since their registration, while members of a certain political party tell them they will be paid next week.
Apoera’s captain, Marchano Jong, expressed his frustration that residents must protest to receive attention for their social support payments. Even people with disabilities had to join the protest, which he believes is inappropriate.
“The people signed up over seven months ago and haven’t heard anything from Sozavo since,” said the captain. “People need to be paid; they are struggling. They’re waiting for their money, and even the general child allowance (AKB) isn’t being paid,” dignitary Jong added. He also mentioned that people have yet to receive their ‘Moni Karta,’ which is still not in order.
District Commissioner Josta Lewis of Kabalebo also spoke out on the issue. According to Lewis, ABOP representatives had promised that payments would occur shortly after the application process, but nothing materialized. “If the people hadn’t protested, they wouldn’t have heard anything,” said Lewis. She added that the minister took no action on the requests until residents began the administrative process themselves.
