Minister Henry Ori of Education, Science, and Culture (MinOWC) believes that any issues between the ruling parties VHP and ABOP should be resolved through dialogue. “Things have been said and done, but it is very important that these two parties maintain good communication with each other,” said the minister yesterday in the presence of President Chan Santokhi (VHP leader) and Vice President Ronnie Brunswijk (ABOP leader).
The group was gathered at the Plein van 10 Oktober 1760 for the laying of wreaths in commemoration of Maroon Day. In his speech, Minister Ori reflected on the political development of the Maroons. He pointed out that parties like BEP and ABOP, as well as prominent Maroons within other political parties, have claimed space for the development of this group. “That is a good thing, and we are seeing that development.”
The minister believes that former VHP leader Jagernath Lachmon would be proud today that the party can work together with ABOP on the development of Suriname. He personally considers this cooperation to be of great importance. “Things have been said and done, but it is very important that these two parties maintain good communication with each other. I see in the press that we are arguing unnecessarily, but if there are issues, we must resolve them through discussion.”
The minister also acknowledged that both the president and vice president have worked hard over the past four and a half years to get the country back on track. He said there have been many challenges and that the government had a difficult start. It is important that VHP and ABOP continue working together to further develop the country. “There are issues, but only through sound policies and dialogue with each other can we move forward.”
