The political party Leefbaar Suriname aims to implement significant governmental changes in Suriname. Citizens should have more influence on policy decisions through referendums. The party also proposes shortening the government’s term from five to four years. If a government performs poorly, the people wouldn’t have to wait long before such a cabinet steps down.
The political system should also be replaced with something new. Rather than the president, a prime minister should be politically responsible for the country’s policy. The government’s involvement will decrease, and it will only play a facilitating role for various sectors.
Leefbaar Suriname believes that the agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) could have been a unique moment on which the people could have expressed their views. This way, the government wouldn’t have had to endure years of criticism.
In an interview with Radio ABC, Chairman Robert Vishnudatt said that his organization has had constructive discussions with political and social groups. Upon gaining government power, among other things, the issues mentioned above will be addressed. Vishnudatt further stated that cooperation with all groups should lead to the formation of an alternative bloc in the upcoming elections.
The organization looks forward to the moment when new leaders with fresh ideas enter the political arena. Vishnudatt notes that the current leaders often only respond and correct mistakes when the situation has already seriously deteriorated, leaving the population to bear the consequences. According to Leefbaar Suriname, there is currently no transparent communication.
