Obed Kanape, the faction leader of ABOP, has reached a point where he prefers not to respond to accusations from political opponents. He believes it is more important to focus on developing models that address the problems facing society. Kanape continues to support his party’s approach of fighting for the underprivileged.
He does not see the tension between coalition partners as an issue. In his view, this is how democracy works. The clashes within the government stem from the fact that the country is being led by two contrasting political systems: a capitalist organization and a social-democratic order. He shared these thoughts during an interview with TBN Prime Alert.
Reflecting on 4.5 years of the Santokhi administration, Kanape expressed dissatisfaction with the President’s leadership, especially during times of crisis. He believes the President should have been more unifying for the entire community.
Kanape acknowledges that he has been criticized, but he stands by his claim that the President is a “self-saboteur.” He noted that the President threw certain ministers “under the bus” when there were many questions about policies, specifically referencing developments within the Ministry of Land Policy and Forestry Management (GBB).
Kanape further pointed out that the President’s attitude has caused considerable discontent. He stressed that ABOP has always prioritized the interests of society, as evidenced by the party’s continuous efforts to ensure resources were made available when needed. Although it hasn’t always succeeded, Kanape credits ABOP with helping maintain some balance in the cabinet.
