Staatsolie director Annand Jagesar advises the government to take an advance on the oil revenues expected to flow in by 2028. The money could be used immediately to improve education, safety, and the situation of the elderly, who have suffered the most during the crisis.
Jagesar sees no point in waiting until 2028, as the dollars will surely start flowing in. He suggests taking an advance of US$ 200 million, which would be sufficient to support the youth and the elderly. The Staatsolie executive qualifies his advice by stating that the money must be used strictly for these purposes and nothing else.
In the program Mmanten Taki on STVS, the Staatsolie director said that these sectors urgently need assistance. According to him, it makes no sense to wait another four years. To ensure that the money is used properly, he also suggests establishing a council or committee made up of coalition members, opposition, and NGOs to act as watchdogs.
Jagesar offers this suggestion primarily as a citizen, because the country has gone through a lot in recent years. According to him, these sectors could greatly benefit from the advance. However, TotalEnergies and APA will not make this money directly available. The Final Investment Decision (FID) has ensured that revenues are guaranteed, allowing the government to borrow this amount through the bank.
The Staatsolie director says there is too much complaining and talking. According to him, all key groups should think about how Suriname can start benefiting from the advantages now. He emphasizes that the elderly cannot wait another four years for the first revenues. Who guarantees that these people will still be alive then? They have given their strength for years and now deserve better treatment.
He also points out that with the developments in the oil and gas sectors, vocational training will experience a golden era, which will benefit the country. A financial boost for the education sector would be very beneficial, in his view.
