As you may be aware, Paraguay has withdrawn the candidacy of its Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rubén Ramírez Lezcano, for the position of Secretary-General of the Organization of American States (OAS). This is due to the fact that various countries, such as Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, Colombia, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, etc., unexpectedly expressed their support for the Surinamese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Albert Ramdin.
This happened despite the fact that these countries were initially inclined to support Ramdin’s opponent, namely the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Paraguay, Rubén Ramírez Lezcano. Now that there is no longer an opposing candidate for Ramdin, I assume that he will be elected by acclamation.
It was well known that the new U.S. president, Donald Trump, preferred Rubén Ramírez Lezcano. A vote for Lezcano would therefore indirectly mean a vote for (Trump’s favorite) candidate. You are likely aware of how Trump has insulted and belittled various countries, sometimes to the point of outright rudeness.
The choice of the aforementioned countries for Ramdin was not due to his merits or qualities, nor because he is particularly skilled in diplomacy, but rather due to their animosity towards Donald Trump. Canada and Mexico led the way in this animosity, given the heightened tensions between these countries and the U.S. as a result of Trump’s policies.
Consider Trump’s announcement of increased tariffs on Canadian and Mexican products. Brazil, a member of BRICS—which includes China—likely chose China’s side due to Trump’s hostile rhetoric against China and the significant trade relations between Brazil and China. The same applies to other South American countries, which are more inclined towards China than the U.S. In short, Ramdin had the position handed to him due to Donald Trump’s clumsy behavior.
Ramdin is not a diplomatic expert: carbon credits turned out to be a fiascoI remind you that Ramdin went to great lengths to secure American support for his candidacy. He put the security of all of Suriname and its people at risk with his plan to open a Surinamese embassy in Jerusalem, despite nearly all countries being highly cautious about this.
He has consistently acted on his own for personal gain. At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he provides no leadership because he is preoccupied with his own agenda. He has never given Surinamese ambassadors any official instructions regarding objectives to be achieved. It is common knowledge that he is neither approachable nor available for Surinamese ambassadors abroad. As a result, the ambassadors are forced to turn directly to the president.
Not long ago, while in Washington, I was handed a proposal from a major American company. It was an offer to purchase carbon credits for ten years at US$ 100 million per year, totaling US$ 1 billion over a decade. According to information received, it was Ramdin who blocked this proposal. As a result, the State of Suriname now receives only US$ 80 million per year on the global market—an amount that is also uncertain now that Donald Trump has withdrawn the U.S. from the Paris Climate Agreement. This was a missed opportunity for Suriname, for which Ramdin should be held responsible.
Out of nationalist motives, I should be pleased that Ramdin has been handed such a high position, but those same nationalist motives remind me that it was Ramdin himself who placed Surinamese interests below his own.
Ramdin traveled at the expense of society to lobby for his positionThis schemer traveled the world at the expense of society to secure support for his candidacy as OAS Secretary-General. When asked whether this claim was true, he casually stated that he had traveled no more than twice for this purpose. Whether it was once, twice, three times, or a thousand times does not matter. The fact is that he misused public funds at least once for personal gain. That he fails to see the seriousness of this is not surprising to me.

OAS, an Organization that stands for justice. Ramdin too?The OAS primarily fights against impunity for criminals. The fact that certain influential individuals have escaped justice has consistently been condemned by the OAS.
I remind you that the government of which Ramdin is a part, and in which he serves as the “minister of all affairs,” has engaged in class-based justice concerning Bouterse. Initially, discussions were held between Bouterse’s team and President Santokhi’s team to ensure a “soft landing” for Bouterse after his conviction was upheld by the Court of Justice. This soft landing meant that a separate room would be set up for …
