Garbage collectors in the districts of Paramaribo and Wanica have once again stopped their work due to delayed payments from the Ministry of Public Works (OW). This strike, now lasting two weeks, has led to uncollected garbage piling up in various neighborhoods, resulting in overflowing trash bins and unhygienic conditions on the streets.
Residents report that trash bags are being torn open by stray dogs, spreading waste and attracting flies. The contractors responsible for garbage collection indicate that the ministry is months behind on payments. “Some businesses have been waiting six months or longer for payments,” they tell Suriname suriname. “We’re owed millions and can’t keep going without financial support.”
One garbage collector working in Paramaribo expresses frustration with the situation. “Minister Raghoebarsing from Finance and Planning tells us to wait patiently, but without our overdue pay, we simply can’t continue our work. We demand full payment, or there will be no garbage collection.” Another contractor shares that he can’t pay his employees without these funds and wonders how he’s supposed to cover his costs.
Minister of Public Works, Riad Nurmohamed, stated that the financial processing is still being handled. He promises to review the situation again today and ensure that the necessary payments are arranged as quickly as possible.
