During an extraordinary council meeting of the Pertjajah Luhur (PL) party on Saturday evening, party chairman Paul Somohardjo requested the council’s mandate to designate his son, Bronto Somohardjo, as the party’s lead candidate for the May 2025 elections. The council, convened at the party center, unanimously approved the decision, despite potential challenges and obstacles on the path to the elections.
In his address, Somohardjo emphasized that his choice was not based on family ties but on Bronto’s proven leadership qualities and his resolve during turbulent times. “He has shown courage and has demonstrated that he can handle challenges, not only within the party but also in facing those who oppose the PL,” the party leader stated.
He further highlighted that the authority to make this decision rests with the party council, not with the family, underscoring this point with examples from other political contexts. While it is customary for the party chairman to take on the role of lead candidate, Paul Somohardjo has chosen to step back and allow the younger generation to take charge. He will, however, remain as party chairman for at least one to two more years to provide coaching and guidance.
Bronto Somohardjo, currently the PL’s first vice-chair, recently stepped down as Minister of Home Affairs, a decision he said was made to protect the coalition. President Santokhi honorably accepted his resignation, although a successor has yet to be appointed.
The PL is aware of possible political obstacles, including recent developments within the coalition, yet remains resolute. The party is preparing to face these challenges head-on and anticipates that Bronto, as lead candidate, will play a pivotal role in securing a win in the 2025 elections.
With this decision, the PL aims to send a clear message to its supporters: the party is committed to renewal while retaining the experience of the older generation.
